Bio
Rodrigo Veloso (b. 1995, Lisbon) is a multidisciplinary artist and designer based in Brooklyn, New York. Holding a Master’s degree in Architecture from the University of Lisbon (Insitituto Superior Técnico), he began his career as an architect at ARX Portugal before transitioning fully to visual arts. Today, his practice fluidly spans painting, illustration, and graphic design. Together with Inês Ayer, he is a partner at Studio Ayer, an independent design consultancy. Veloso's work bridges traditional and digital mediums and has garnered notable recognition; recently, his painting "Spring break" was featured by Google DeepMind for the launch of their Lyria 3 model. He is a founding member of the global artist community Tableau by Visionary Projects NYC and actively collaborates with the Eyes on Art group. Embracing a global perspective shaped by his background and travels, Veloso has exhibited his work internationally in Lisbon, New York, Paris, and Madrid.
Artist Statement
My practice explores the intersections between the human figure, the natural world, and the environments we inhabit. Though my background in architecture grounds my understanding of space and composition, my truest expression emerges through the tactile immediacy of oil pastel. There is a specific intimacy to this medium, the physical merging of pigment, fingertips, and surface allows for a visceral, hands-on translation of memory and texture. My work is driven by an ongoing curiosity and a history of movement. Immersive experiences across varied geographies, from the distinct landscapes of South America and Africa to the relentless energy of my current home in New York City, continually layer into my visual vocabulary. Rather than merely documenting these places, I aim to capture their raw rhythms and textures. Through this physical, layering process, my art seeks to celebrate diverse ways of living and the universal, tactile threads that connect us to the world around us.
